Prostate Cancer Screening

December 2025

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer and cander death in men in Liberia. Sadly, most men in Liberia are diagnosed at advanced stages due to lack of access to early detection and diagnostic services, lack of awareness about prostate cancer, and stigma associated with prostate cancer screening.

This December, Susu Health Foundation is urging men in Liberia to take charge of their health. In collaboration with Urocare Liberia (Liberia's premier urology clinic) and the Episcopal Church of Liberia, we are providing FREE prostate cancer screening for 100 men ages 40 - 75, and discounted screening after the initial 100 men.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness, but we know that early detection saves lives. Screening should not be limited to September. So we seized the oppoturnity to provide prostate cancer screening to men in Liberia this month!

Breast Cancer Awareness & Screening

October 2021 - 2025

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Early detection saves lives, but for some women in Liberia, breast cancer imaging is cost-prohibitive. Women are forced to make a choice between screening and providing basic neccessities for themselves and their families.

In October 2021, Susu Health Foundation collaborated with Wellness Partners Clinic in Monrovia to provide free breast cancer screening for women in need.

In October 2022, the collaboration expanded to include Hope for Women International and local chapters for the four Black sororities (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.,) in a larger effort to provide lifesaving breast cancer screening to women in the month of October, and to fund treatment thereafter.

This collaborative Breast Cancer Awareness  & Screening campaing has continued annually since then, with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc not participating in 2024. Outreach has expanded through to years with nurses going into the community to locations like chuches, mosques and marketplaces to take screening to women who otherwise may not go in for evaluation.

Liberia PPE Fundraiser

The increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in Liberia also significantly impacts the healthcare system's capacit to provide routine care. Healthcare workers are in dire need of personal protective  equipment (PPE) to protect themselves and to ensure that they can continue to provide routine health services for all patients needing care. Susu Health Foundation, LIB Healthline and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, Liberia Zetas collaborated with the Healthcare Federation of Liberia to expeditiously meet this need via bulk purchases of supplies.

A total of $1530 was raised to provide private clinics in Monrovia with much-needed infection prevention and control materials including face masks, exam gloves and thermometers. Menstrual Health Youth Symposium

May 2025

We co-sponsored the Menstrual Health Symposium hosted by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc for 150 schoool-aged girls in Grand Bassa County, Liberia on May 30, 2025. Similar to the previous event, the girls attended workshops on menstrual hygiene, financial literacy, substance use prevention, and STEM education. Each girl also received hygiene kits containing items such as reusable menstural pads, underwear, deodorant and soap.

This symposium made an impact in addressing period poverty!

What is Period Poverty?

Period poverty is the inability to afford and access menstrual products, sanitation facilities, and education to manage menstrual health. This has major negative impact on the lives of affected women and girls. They may have to miss school and work during their monthly period and may be at increased risk of infection from use of inappropriate menstrual products.

June 2023

Susu Health Foundation sponsored 25 girls who attended  A Menstrual Health Youth Symposium hosted by  Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in Monrovia Liberia on June 10. 2023. The goal of the symposium was to end period poverty. Attendees participated in workshops about mentrual hygiene, period poverty, finance and substance use prevention. Other topics covered include family planning and self-care. A total of 150 secondary school girls attended the symposium.

Handwashing Stations

June 2020

We support community members who are doing their part to contribute to the containment of COVID-19 in Liberia. We applaud the volunteers who man handwashing stations at the entrances to their communities and provide soap and water for everyone entering their community, often relying on their own resources. We donated packages containing soap, face masks, rice, oil, mackerel and maggi cubes to handwashing station volunteers in several communities around Monrovia including Devine Town, Central Community, Lakpazee,  12th Street Block 4, and 12 Street Blocks A-F to support their efforts.
